You want me to sign WHAT before your kid's party?

By Jacoba Urist ( http://moms.today.msnbc.msn.com)

Most of us aren’t shocked when we’re asked to sign a waiver before a school trip or the start of little league season.  Normal stuff kids participate in every day can result in some minor (and now and again, major) injuries, and some adults get litigious when something goes awry.

Most of these organizations are just doing what their insurance companies require: getting every parent to legally agree that they know the risks involved and won’t hold the school or the sports league responsible if their child is hurt.

But more and more parents are encountering legal forms from other parents before our kids do the most basic things, like attend a birthday party or even a good, old-fashioned play date.

In the Washington Post, a reader asked Miss Manners for her take on signing a parental waiver before her son went over to a classmate’s home. (Miss Manners wasn’t too hot on them). Melissa Livingston, a mother of two in Long Island, had a similar question for me when asked to sign a release-of-liability right on a birthday invite.
“I wanted to run it by a lawyer to know exactly what I was getting into, but now I see them all the time,” she explained.

So should you agree to a waiver?

Well, if a family is throwing a birthday party at an activity center or renting a bouncy house, for example, the “hold harmless” form is usually company policy and it’s not up to the parents who invited you. You should know that states vary on how enforceable these waivers actually are, but there’s always the possibility that you wouldn’t be able to recover for any of the injuries if something went wrong.

But if you aren’t comfortable signing one, you should anticipate the situation before your child arrives at the party and is put on the spot in front of everyone else.  Since most kid gyms require some sort of release, you can simply call the location ahead of time to ask about it, and decline the invitation, if that’s a deal-breaker for you.

Of course, when a mom presents a waiver before your toddler can enter her living room, that’s another story.  Many people find the behavior rude and unfriendly— turning a pleasant, neighborly interaction into a formal legal relationship.

In this case, try to explain your position to the host — that you understand kids will be kids, and that you’re not big on the whole waiver idea for personal interactions. You can also see whether there’s a specific safety concern, like having another child in their pool, and if so, assure her that you guys are prepared to stay on dry land for the afternoon. If she’s still not satisfied? Maybe sign it this once, and hang out with another mom in the future.

Have you ever been asked to sign a waiver for a birthday party or play date? Would you?

Easter Egg Hunt Etiquette For The Parents

BY

If there ever was a time for a little etiquette you would think it would be the holidays. Easter is coming up very soon and parents seem to think anything goes for those Easter egg hunts. I have seen many different things when taking my kids to a Easter egg hunt.  Yes, there are exceptions to the rules but let your kids look for the eggs a little. Quit pointing everything out or standing on top of them while they are looking, give them a little space. Theresa over at Rock on Mommies has a great post on this as well. I love seeing what everyone has to say on this. I have read a few stories of Easter egg hunts being cancelled because of aggressive parents. No fair, Moms and Dads, take a deep breath and count to ten!

Most of you know what I mean, those who don’t…stand back and let you’re helicopter mommy self breathe a
little, then give the kid some breathing room too. There are only a few rules parents so let’s read on.

The Rules:
1. Parents of children who are old enough to walk well (over 3), let them hunt alone.
Don’t hover over your child pointing out every egg and leaving none for the other kids.
2. Parents, do not scream at your kids and point where eggs are from the sidelines, they will see them.
3. Don’t go into the egg hunting area with your kids unless they cannot walk and even then, help nicely (Check if there is a crawlers or younger children’s area).

That’s it!
Have fun but let your child be a child and have some fun, no coaches, just fun. If you can’t handle it then have your own hunt and go crazy. Now, no hoarding eggs and have a Happy Easter!

Texting to be allowed in Theaters? Really...

Study Finds That Young Moviegoers Want Texting To Be Allowed In Theaters.  (Of course they would is it just me or is this crazy.)

We always knew there would be a day when social media went too far, and this seems to be it. According to a study conducted by The Hollywood Reporter, a majority of moviegoers ages 18-to-34 believe using social media while watching a movie in the theater would make their experience more enjoyable, and nearly half would be interested in going to theaters that allowed texting and web-surfing during a screening.

“Millennials want their public moviegoing experience to replicate their own private media experiences,” says pollster Jon Penn.“Having dedicated social-media-friendly seats, or even entire theaters, can make the moviegoing experience more relevant and enjoyable for them.”

The scary thing is that theaters are actually considering this practice, and, according to /Film, one is about to allow it. At this point all we can do is sit back and shudder at the thought of movie theaters turning into lawless wastelands where texting, tweeting, and games of "Words with Friends" are the main attraction, while the film itself just serves as an unwanted distraction up on the big screen. Where are the ushers with the light-up orange cones when you need them?

We're certainly not opposed to the wonderful tool that is social media, but if it interferes with our movie-going experience, then we have a problem.
