Date Set for the Grand Opening of Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom

http://www.mommymusings.com/grand-opening-fantasyland-date/

I remember sitting in awe when I first heard the news about the Fantasyland expansion at the Magic Kingdom. I think that was back in 2010, and the renderings presented were unbelievable. Among the list of additions were Beast’s Castle from Beauty and the Beast and an attraction featuring The Little Mermaid, much to my daughter’s delight.

What’s even more unbelievable is the Grand Opening of Fantasyland is right around the corner — with an official date set for December 6, 2012! Previews will begin on November 19, for those that want a sneak peek ;)

Since I have been away for most of the summer, I haven’t seen any of the transformation going on at the Magic Kingdom, which should make for an even more impressive reveal! I’ve been told that Storybook Circus is open with the new dueling Dumbo, the Flying Elephant ride, The Great Goofini coaster (formerly Barnstormer), and Casey Junior’s Splash and Soak area.

The main attractions that I’m looking forward to are The Little Mermaid Ride and Be Our Guest Restaurant (food counts as an attraction, right!?) in Enchanted Forest … thankfully, I won’t have to wait much longer!
The Grand Opening of Fantasyland will include:

Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid Ride

Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid is a major attraction where guests will travel with Ariel and her friends through their exciting adventures above and below the waves – all against a musical backdrop of songs from the film. The new attraction combines the enduring appeal of a classic Disney “dark ride” with wonderful technological innovations to offer guests a personal journey into the scenes of the film. Adventurers will feel as if they are descending below the ocean’s surface. Once “under the sea,” guests will find themselves immersed in the story of “The Little Mermaid,” sharing Ariel’s adventure through a magical cast of characters and a captivating musical score that will entice everyone to sing along.  The fun continues at “Ariel’s Grotto,” a meet-and-greet with the mermaid heroine herself.

The Castle of the Beast

The Be Our Guest Restaurant will feature a lavish dining experience in the elegant ballroom, gallery, and mysterious “West Wing” of the castle. With seating for 550, this magnificent facility will offer “great food fast” service by day and full table service dining in the evening. Nearby in Belle’s Village, guests will find the rousing Gaston’s Tavern and Bonjour! Village Gifts.

Enchanted Tales with Belle

The adventure begins in Maurice’s workshop, where a magical mirror is the doorway to a captivating new kind of storytelling experience: guests will be transported to the Beast’s library to meet Belle and Lumiere, and share in a lively, interactive re-telling of the “tale as old as time.”
Are you excited as I am about the opening of the new Fantasyland? What feature/attraction are you most looking forward to?

Ziplining at Florida EcoSafaris

by: mommymusings.com

"I didn't even know you could zipline in Florida how awesome this has definetely been on my bucketlist for a while just never imagined I could do it right here in Florida, awesome!!!" I think I will definetely visit EcoPark.

It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve been on a zipline, I always get nervous. There’s that feeling of being too scared to let go — having to trust that the harness is secure — but the moment I give into my fears, I remember how fun and freeing it is to glide through the treetops. It’s always a thrill!
Ziplining at Florida EcoSafaris definitely ranks up there with some of the best. The EcoPark is one of the largest I’ve ever seen, offering way more than just traditional ziplines.

I started my day with the standard Zipline Safari — which consists of 7 “zips”, 2 sky-bridges, and 10 Observation Platforms with views of the entire Forever Florida Wildlife Conservation Area. At the highest point, I was 68′ in the air and reached speeds of 30 mph! It was really exciting going through the conservation area because there is a ton of wildlife and you never know what you’re going to see.

I’ve experienced quite a few different types of ziplines and I would consider Florida EcoSafaris to be one of the safest as you don’t have to use your hands to stop yourself — this is one of the things I didn’t enjoy on other ziplines. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and patient — even double-checking to make sure I was secure on every line!

After the Zipline Safari, I had the opportunity to try out The Rattlesnake, the new zipline rollercoaster. The Rattlesnake is the first zipline of its kind in the US — twisting, turning and dipping more than 1000 ft! As much as I love the standard zipline run, The Rattlesnake was quite an adventure. There are some dips that almost take your breath away — I would find it hard for anyone not to scream on this ride … so much fun for thrill-seekers!

In addition to the Zipline Safari and The Rattlesnake, there are four other attractions at the EcoPark:
Peregrine Plunge – the longest single straightaway zipline in Florida. Measuring in at an astonishing 1300 feet in length, this adventure has breathtaking thrills and views. With two sets of lines side by side, you’ll be competing against another rider as you race towardyour landing point. The adventure allows a clear line of sight looking out ten miles over pristinely kept Florida conservation lands.

Panther Pounce -Muster up the courage to step off a 68’ platform into a thrilling but safely controlled freefall to the ground below.

Swooping Crane – an extreme swing where guests release from a height of 55 feet into a freefall before swooping back and forth between the trees and over the brush.

Cypress Canopy Cycle – Suspended from a network of high tension steel cables, you’ll pedal your way through the Pine Flatwoods and over densely forested wetlands on this one of a kind 45 minute journey.

All of these adventures — a full day’s worth — can be enjoyed for only $135 per person, ages 10 and up.

Savvy travelers save with CityPASS

Savvy travelers save with CityPASS

Traveling to big cities can be an expensive venture. After airfare and a pricey hotel room (which can cost even more than your airfare, but that’s another story), there are meals and attractions to pay for. But there’s a good deal to be had for visitors to such cities as New York, Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco and a handful of others. It’s called the CityPASS.

For 15 years, CityPASS has been the way savvy tourists get into top attractions and without waiting in line at ticket windows. Because if you buy one for your destination, you save about 50% on the price of admission to various museums, zoos, aquariums and other local attractions.

We used one on a visit to Boston and were very glad we did. Not only was it cheaper to get into the aquarium there, but it was a day when there was no school and the lines at the ticket window were endless. We walked right up to the gate, handed them our CityPASS tickets and went right in. We beat the crowds and never stood in line.

Prices vary by destination, but the Boston one, for example, is $46 ($29 for children) and includes some stellar attractions, which would have cost about $90 if we’d paid for them individually.

CityPass ticket books are valid for 9 to 14 days (depending on your destination), so they’ll cover most vacation times (or, if you live in one of these cities and want to do a “stay-cation” this year).

They’re also available for Chicago, Hollywood, Philadelphia, Seattle, Toronto and Southern California. You can see a full list or find out more on the CityPASS website.

Is that bargain cruise really a bargain?

by (livingonthecheap.com)

Cruises offer some of the best bargain vacations on the market today. But to make sure your cruise remains a true bargain, you have to be smart about “the spend.” Cruise lines, particularly those on the lower end of the market, can offer promotional prices that seem almost like giveaways. That’s because they expect you to spend freely once you’re onboard.

It’s easy to lose track of what you spend (especially if you’re a first-timer) when your money is locked away in your cabin’s safe and all you have to do is hand over a card for that souvenir photo, time spent in the Internet café, the delicious frozen cocktails or the premium coffee that smells so good when you pass the smiling barista.

Plan ahead and you can have a great time without running up a big credit card bill. Here’s how.

1. Do your homework. Know in advance what is included and what is not. Cruise ships generally have specialty restaurants – sushi bars, Italian trattorias or steak houses, for example – in addition to the main dining rooms and buffets. Some are free, some carry fees. Shore excursions are not free, though the cruise line may provide shuttles from the dock to a city’s center. Though fitness centers are generally free, special classes often carry a small fee. Spas and salon services are a la carte. Entertainment is generally free. Most programs for youngsters are free, though babysitting is not. Internet use is not included; it is much more expensive than the cost at an Internet café in port.

2. Make a budget. Plan ahead what you can comfortably spend and check the prices of things before you hand over your ship’s charge card.

3. Be careful with drinks. Here’s where costs can mount up quickly. You can find dispensers of water and iced tea around the ship, and you can order tea, coffee and (unbottled) water from room service at no charge. Everything else will cost you. Cocktails and wine are free during the Ccaptain’s welcome party. At other times, they’re expensive, so plan ahead on how you’ll use your alcohol budget. Soft drinks are pricey, too, so if you have to have them, buy a beverage package after you board. Instead of spending money on those specialty coffees, order a latte or cappuccino with your meal in the dining room – at no cost.

4. Look for spa specials. If a spa treatment is on your list of must-have treats, find out when there might be “specials.” Many lower-end cruises offer substantial discounts on the days when the ship is in port. Thermal suites on cruise ships come at a cost; the Jacuzzis on pool deck are free.

5. Explore on the cheap. Shore excursions are pricey. Do some advance research and find out what free or low-price options are available at your ports of call. For example, many large cities have guided hop-on, hop-off bus tours that cost less than similar tours booked through the cruise company.

6. Skip that Internet. Internet onboard is both expensive and slow, so unless you have an urgent need to be online, stop instead at the Internet cafes you’ll find on land.

7. Do your own laundry.  Some ships have washers and dryers onboard; many do not. Having your laundry done by the ship’s crew is expensive, so pack accordingly and bring along a small supply of detergent so you can wash out small items in your cabin.

Finally, if you decide that you really do want a lot of these extras, check the prices on the more upscale cruise lines and calculate the value of the extras they include – like specialty dining, etc. Do the math to compare cheap cruises with few inclusions with pricier ones that offer more perks.

Bahamas Express Ferry Links Florida and the Bahamas

The fast ferry, Pinar del Río

The Baleària Group marked a new milestone in travel with a high speed maritime transport service between Fort Lauderdale and Grand Bahama island. The new service, which operates under the Bahamas Express brand, is a firm commitment to the internationalization of the company and also, therefore, to consolidating the company’s growth in the current economic climate.

"The Bahamas Express service provides an important link between South Florida and The Bahamas" said David Johnson, director general of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. "It is an affordable and easily accessible option that appeals to a variety of travelers, particularly families and for those seeking a relaxing and hassle free route to The Bahamas. We look forward to treating guests to our Bahamian hospitality, whether coming for a day or staying for a week."

The fast ferry, Pinar del Río, will operate the new service between Florida and the Bahamas, which undertakes the 76-mile crossing in 2.5 hours. Baleària Bahamas Express operates on a daily basis, except on Wednesdays, departing from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale at 10am and returning to the port at 10:30pm, allowing U.S. passengers to take day trips to Grand Bahama island.

The fast ferry Pinar del Río, which sails at a speed of 32 knots, has a capacity to hold up to 463 passengers. The ship also boasts different services such as a bar-cafeteria, duty-free shopping and tourist class and first class accommodation, among others. The interior will also be decorated with the same graphics, which depict the sea bed and is dominated by bright colors.

President of Baleària Adolfo Utor highlighted the potential of this area of the Caribbean and explained that it complements the routes which the company operates in the Mediterranean. Utor also pointed out that there is a market of more than 200,000 passengers per year on this new route adding that the company is also working on opening another connection to the Bahamian island of Bimini.

Carnival Destiny to be Renamed Carnival Sunshine + Major Transformation

By mommymusings.com

My family just finished cruising on the Carnival Destiny for spring break.  We went to Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman 5 days.  So when I came across this article I couldn't believe the ship will take on a major transformation.  Very interesting!

Representing Carnival Cruise Lines’ most ambitious refit and transformation project ever, Carnival Destiny will undergo a $155 million makeover next year that will incorporate all of the line’s “Fun Ship 2.0” dining, bar and entertainment features, as well as a variety of exciting innovations unique to this vessel.

The refit will also include a reconfigured layout, the addition of a partial deck and the expansion of two other decks within the forward section of the ship, providing the opportunity to incorporate a number of new and exciting on-board spaces. One-hundred and eighty-two cabins will be added, as well.

The redesign will be so extensive and wide-ranging that the ship will be renamed Carnival Sunshine following the 49-day dry dock, which will take place from February to April 2013.  The refit work will be completed by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.

Disney Fantasy Arrives Home at Port Canaveral

(dclnews.com)

New ship is expected to generate more than 500 jobs in Central Florida

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. (March 6, 2012) – Disney Cruise Line welcomed its fourth ship, the Disney Fantasy, early this morning to its new homeport in Port Canaveral, Fla. after a 19-day trans-Atlantic voyage from Germany and a stop in New York for its Christening last week.

With the addition of the Disney Fantasy, Port Canaveral and the region is experiencing sizeable economic benefits. The Disney Fantasy is expected to generate more than 500 direct, indirect and induced jobs in the area and attract thousands of additional cruise guests to the port, according to an economic impact study by Martin Associates.

“Not only is the arrival of the Disney Fantasy an important milestone for our business, it will also have a positive impact on the Central Florida community,” said Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line. “With our fourth ship, we are able to generate more jobs and economic activity for the region while delivering even more cruising options for families to share unforgettable cruise experiences with us.”

To accommodate the expanded operation, new ships and increase in guest capacity, Disney Cruise Line worked with Port Canaveral to expand the dock area and terminal facility in early 2011. Along with the construction of a new parking structure and a sky bridge walkway, guests experience a state-of-the-art facility, making the transition from land to sea relatively seamless.

“We are excited to welcome the Disney Fantasy home,” said Port Canaveral Chief Executive Officer Stan Payne. “The arrival of the Disney Dream last year made a significant economic impact on Central Florida and we know the Disney Fantasy will add to that dramatically. We have seen our local businesses benefit when a ship of this magnitude and special Disney magic becomes part of our community.”

Beginning with its maiden voyage on March 31, the Disney Fantasy will embark on seven-night sailings, alternating between Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, with a stop at Castaway Cay, Disney’s own private island in The Bahamas.

With a tonnage of 130,000 and a guest capacity of up to 4,000, the Disney Fantasy is the second of two new, and significantly larger, ships that are being added to the Disney fleet. The Disney Dream arrived in early 2011 and is currently sailing three-, four- and five-night itineraries to the Bahamas, also from Port Canaveral.

Disney Cruise Line established the blue-print for family cruising when the business launched in 1998.  The first two ships, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, which were launched in 1998 and 1999, respectively, were purposely built for families to reconnect, adults to recharge and kids to immerse themselves in worlds of fantasy only Disney can create.

With the addition of the two new ships, Disney Cruise Line will celebrate 2012 with its most diverse sailing itineraries to date. New in 2012, the Disney Magic will offer eight-night cruises to the Bahamas and five-night cruises up the New England coast sailing from New York, and seven-night western Caribbean itineraries departing from Galveston, Texas. The Disney Wonder will continue sailing seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises from the Port of Los Angeles, while spending its second summer sailing Alaskan itineraries from Seattle.

Most recently, the Disney Dream won the top spot for “Best Bahamas Cruises” and “Best Cabins” in the 2012 Cruise Critic Cruisers’ Choice Awards.  Disney Cruise Line was recognized by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine as the top “Cruise Ships of the World,” with the Disney Magic being voted No. 1 and the Disney Dream and Disney Wonder tying for No. 2. Travel + Leisure magazine also ranked Disney Cruise Line the No. 1 Large-Ship Cruise Line for Families.

Top 10 Beach Destinations in the United States

Tripadvisor.com

Millions of Travelers chose these destinations: Traveler's Choice 2012

Sugary-white sand, dolphins frolicking just off shore and eight major barrier islands make St. Pete Beach a postcard-perfect seaside destination. Situated on a peninsula off Florida's west coast, it is an ideal place to experience the state's wild beauty and the magical golden rays of the Sunshine State.

At the shore in Miami Beach, visitors can swim, surf and jet ski in the warm and crystal-clear Atlantic waters. You can also nap on the white sands, work on a tan or simply watch the beautiful people, especially at South Beach, a favorite of models and celebrities

Myrtle Beach boasts some of the best beaches on America's East Coast, which are distinguished by panoramic views of the Atlantic, calm waters and soft white sand. Ideal for swimming and sunbathing, Myrtle Beach also offers plenty of family attractions, making it perfect for beach-lovers with kids.

Virginia Beach has all the elements of a classic seaside resort: gorgeous beaches, a lively boardwalk, plenty of restaurants and nightspots, and amusement rides sure to appeal to kids. Sports enthusiasts will find celebrated golf courses in Virginia Beach and the surrounding area, as well as sea kayaking and miles of hiking trails. Many believe Virginia Beach is at its best in the off-season, when the town is less crowded but the weather is still mild.

Honolulu is a legendary surfing destination. But even if you don’t know a boogie board from a surfboard, you’ll find a beach here that appeals to you (and, if you want to learn the difference, you can find a great instructor to teach you). Swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, outrigger canoeing or just sunbathing… it’s all available in Honolulu.

Ever since a multi-million-dollar clean-up and renovation of its beachfront area, Daytona Beach has seen more families coming to relax on the beach, stroll the boardwalk and visit nearby museums and theme parks. A hot spot for auto racing enthusiasts, the Daytona International Speedway hosts the Daytona 500 and other races.

Its stretch of gorgeous beaches, great swimming, nearly year-round sunshine, and close-to-ideal climate are Fort Lauderdale's biggest attractions. Stroll down Las Olas Boulevard to find top-notch boutiques and restaurants. Nightlife lovers flock to the nearby Riverfront area. The city has a host of family-friendly options, too.

Ka’anapali Beach in Lahaina is one of Maui’s best—spend the day in the surf and sand, then return at sunset to watch the beach’s spectacular cliff-diving ceremony. But while the beaches here are phenomenal, there’s more to discover in town. Don’t miss a walk through Lahaina’s Historic District, a National Historic Landmark.

Beaches and bays dot the coast of California's second-largest city. Top-rated, family-friendly Coronado Beach is set among turn-of-the-century mansions. Other gorgeous sandy spots include Blacks Beach, where sunbathers go au naturel, and La Jolla Shores, popular for snorkeling and kayaking.

We aren’t going to lie to you—you won’t find stunning white-sand beaches in Key West. But Key West is one of our top Beach Destinations because it’s a great place for water activities (if you can do it on the ocean, you can probably do it here), and it has a fun, laid-back island atmosphere. Once the sun sets, Key West’s nightlife is legendary… and literary, thanks to everyone’s favorite author/barfly, Ernest Hemingway.
