City Introduces New 100-ft. Ladder Fire Truck

Superheroes can leap over tall buildings, but when you’re stuck in a fire emergency high above the ground, you need the assistance of the right equipment. With safety and service in mind, the City of Coral Gables has purchased a new state-of-the-art fire ladder truck with an aerial platform that can extend up to 100 feet in almost any direction. This vehicle replaces a 1985 model which has been in service for 28 years. Recently, members of the City Commission received a tour of the new fire truck which will be in service soon, ready to assist in any emergencies happening on single family structures or tall buildings in Downtown Coral Gables. Aside from its water-pumping capabilities, the platform features a control panel to monitor critical information and a video camera. Real time data and video can be sent wirelessly to a command center on the ground. The cost of the new truck was $1.1 million.

L-R: Interim Fire Chief Marc Stolzenberg and members of the City Commission including Commissioner Frank Quesada, Commissioner Vince Lago, Vice Mayor Bill Kerdyk Jr., and Commissioner Pat Keon look over the new fire truck while receiving a $1,000 donation from the  Coral Gables Firefighters Benevolent Association to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund.

Implementation of Zone Patrol

Last week, the Police Department partitioned the City into 12 geographically-defined beats, referred to as zones.  Each Patrol Officer is now being permanently assigned to an individual zone, as opposed to 4 large sectors referred to as areas (e.g. North of Bird) as was previously the practice since 2007.  Whereas before, officers could patrol different areas, now they have specific beats that they are assigned to on a long term basis. This is being done to cultivate community based policing, as officers are empowered to address issues and needs in the neighborhoods they are responsible for and work each day, resulting in a sense of ownership on the part of each officer and greater visibility in the community.  Officers will now be more accountable and expected to develop strategies or call on resources as needed to further improve the neighborhoods they patrol as they concentrate on community concerns and crime trends specific to their zones.

The Palace Opens In Downtown Coral Gables

Helen and Jacob Shaham, founders of The Palace Group, hosted a grand opening ceremony last week to officially welcome the first luxury senior living facility built in Downtown Coral Gables. The Palace at Coral Gables is a public-private partnership with the City of Coral Gables. The City awarded the company a 99-year land lease with the provision that a parking garage for public and private use also be built. The nine-story facility draws its inspiration from Mediterranean influence and the urban fabric of Coral Gables. The architecture was inspired by the world-renown George V Hotel of Paris, recreating its luxury and ambiance while providing optimum attention to the most intricate of details. “In addition to bringing a beautiful facility that enhances the Coral Gables’ downtown, the project provides significant financial benefits to the City and its taxpayers,” said Mayor Jim Cason.” The building location steps away from Miracle Mile offers residents the benefits of an urban village location that provides every comfort and amenity for senior living without having to move from the city they love. Italian Trade Commission Set
to Open & Expand in Coral Gables

Coral Gables welcomes a newcomer to its consular community this September. The Italian Trade Commission is relocating its Southeastern headquarters from Atlanta to Coral Gables, expanding its formerly smaller South Florida presence that has been serving the area since 2005. The expanded operation will facilitate economic development, trade delegations, and support services for Italian and foreign companies in South Florida. Their office will join the Consulate General of Italy’s office at 4000 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Suite 590.
“We are very pleased to be opening a completely autonomous office in Coral Gables,” said Fabrizio Giustarini, Italian Trade Commission, Trade Promotion Section of the Consulate General of Italy. “This regional office will be strengthened through the addition of more personnel as well as the presence of a new Director, who will be joining us from our headquarters in Rome, Italy.”
Coral Gables has long been recognized as a hub for corporations, multinationals and consulate offices. In fact, the City is home to 21 foreign consulates and government offices that serve the needs of a diverse and international population, representing a variety of countries located in Central and South America, Europe and countries as far away as Asia. “We’re proud to be host City to a great number of consulates and foreign offices,” said Mayor Jim Cason. “With a large multinational base and diverse population, having the consulate offices provides convenient support for our community and adds to the City’s international appeal. We welcome the Italian Trade Commission as a vital part of the cultural and economic fabric of the City.” To learn more about the Italian Trade Commission, click here.

For Play "Rated P For Parenthood"

Beginning this Saturday, June 22, seniors and youth living in Coral Gables can reserve free tickets, on a first-come, first-served basis, for the musical “Rated P For Parenthood” chronicling the 21st century joys and frustrations of raising children, from bleary-eyed late night feedings and private school kindergarten interviews, to nail-biting driving lessons and prom night. The free admission is for the July 10 and July 11, 8 p.m. performances at the Miracle Theatre, located at 280 Miracle Mile. The free ticket offer is part of the lease agreement between the City of Coral Gables and its tenant, Actors' Playhouse, an idea proposed by City Manager Pat Salerno. Residents (ages 60 and over and under 18 years of age accompanied by one parent) must come in person to the War Memorial Youth Center, 405 University Drive, to be placed on a reservation list after showing proof of residency and age. Tickets will then be available at the Playhouse's will-call window prior to each performance. There is a limit of 50 free admissions for each performance, based on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets are limited to two per household. Free admission for additional upcoming plays will be announced at later dates. Remember The “Five Ds” For Mosquito Control

With the recent downpours in the area and the expected rainy season, mosquitoes will become a part of the summer nuisance for all of us. Mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as the West Nile virus and dengue fever, so it’s important to protect yourself and your family from these pesky insects. Remember that any standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. To guard against the harm that mosquitoes can cause, remember the following “Five Ds”:
  • Dusk and Dawn: avoid the outdoors when mosquitoes are most active;
  • Dress: cover most of your skin with long pants and sleeves, shoes and socks;
  • Drain: Get rid of any standing water in flower pots, pet dishes, bottles, garbage cans, gutters or other water collectors;
  • DEET: use repellents containing up to 30 percent of DEET.
Residents experiencing a mosquito nuisance can contact Miami-Dade County’s Mosquito Control at 311 to report a problem. Complaints are serviced by the county either by truck spraying, aerial spraying or by site inspections.

Each rack installed in the 11-Trolley fleet can hold two bicycles, a free service provided by the City of Coral Gables. The Coral Gables Trolleys run along Ponce de Leon Boulevard from the Douglas Metrorail Station to Flagler Street. Customers Can Now Print A Permit Card Online

The City of Coral Gables has implemented a new online Permit Card Printing function that will benefit contractors and residents looking to have quick access to a paid permit. A Permit Card is the official authorization from the City of Coral to start the proposed construction, repair or improvement work. This new function will allow customers to automatically receive the Permit Card requested via email after a permit is paid. Previously, the customer had to wait until the next business day to receive the Permit Card through a manual process. This process is available for any request of building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and zoning permits. The City requires that all Permit Cards be posted in job sites. The new function will eliminate the delays in receiving the Permit Card, allowing customers to print the Permit Card with the convenience of 24/7 availability and as fast as an email can travel.
