Easter Egg Hunt Etiquette For The Parents

BY

If there ever was a time for a little etiquette you would think it would be the holidays. Easter is coming up very soon and parents seem to think anything goes for those Easter egg hunts. I have seen many different things when taking my kids to a Easter egg hunt.  Yes, there are exceptions to the rules but let your kids look for the eggs a little. Quit pointing everything out or standing on top of them while they are looking, give them a little space. Theresa over at Rock on Mommies has a great post on this as well. I love seeing what everyone has to say on this. I have read a few stories of Easter egg hunts being cancelled because of aggressive parents. No fair, Moms and Dads, take a deep breath and count to ten!

Most of you know what I mean, those who don’t…stand back and let you’re helicopter mommy self breathe a
little, then give the kid some breathing room too. There are only a few rules parents so let’s read on.

The Rules:
1. Parents of children who are old enough to walk well (over 3), let them hunt alone.
Don’t hover over your child pointing out every egg and leaving none for the other kids.
2. Parents, do not scream at your kids and point where eggs are from the sidelines, they will see them.
3. Don’t go into the egg hunting area with your kids unless they cannot walk and even then, help nicely (Check if there is a crawlers or younger children’s area).

That’s it!
Have fun but let your child be a child and have some fun, no coaches, just fun. If you can’t handle it then have your own hunt and go crazy. Now, no hoarding eggs and have a Happy Easter!

Texting to be allowed in Theaters? Really...

Study Finds That Young Moviegoers Want Texting To Be Allowed In Theaters.  (Of course they would is it just me or is this crazy.)

We always knew there would be a day when social media went too far, and this seems to be it. According to a study conducted by The Hollywood Reporter, a majority of moviegoers ages 18-to-34 believe using social media while watching a movie in the theater would make their experience more enjoyable, and nearly half would be interested in going to theaters that allowed texting and web-surfing during a screening.

Millennials want their public moviegoing experience to replicate their own private media experiences,” says pollster Jon Penn.“Having dedicated social-media-friendly seats, or even entire theaters, can make the moviegoing experience more relevant and enjoyable for them.”

The scary thing is that theaters are actually considering this practice, and, according to /Film, one is about to allow it. At this point all we can do is sit back and shudder at the thought of movie theaters turning into lawless wastelands where texting, tweeting, and games of "Words with Friends" are the main attraction, while the film itself just serves as an unwanted distraction up on the big screen. Where are the ushers with the light-up orange cones when you need them?

We're certainly not opposed to the wonderful tool that is social media, but if it interferes with our movie-going experience, then we have a problem.

Highlights From Miami Beach International Fashion Week

BY (askmissa.com)

The 14th annual Miami Beach International Fashion Week kicked off with inspiring fashions from all over the world plus talented local Miami designer, Kayce Armstrong, and her Art of Shade collection.

The conference began with an opening night press conference hosted by international recording artist and music icon, Dionne Warwick and Grammy Award winning music producer Damon Elliott.
Warwick shared her life experiences, talked about her style and fashion, and gave inspirational advice about how to achieve career success.

Who can forget Warwick’s classic “That’s What Friends Are For”? She received her first Grammy in 1968 and was the first African-American solo female artist of her generation to win an award for Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance.

In addition to her successful music and fashion career, Warwick supports the AIDS Foundation and has served as the U.S. Ambassador for Health.

The Miami Style Showcase featured designs by some of South Florida’s designers including Viviana G. for Petit Pois, Luxxe Collections/LUXXE Golf featuring celebrity golfer Jackie Gonzales from the LPGA Futures Tour, Kayce Armstrong for Art of Shade and Ema Savahl Couture.

In 2011, Kayce Armstrong won the Designer’s Choice Award for her ready-to-wear line, Art of Shade. “This year I am working with tarps from the side of buildings with repurposed dead bolt, the end of the line for the fabric,” said Armstrong to Ina Paiva Cordle with the Miami Herald.

Armstrong started the Art of Shade label in 2003 and developed a loyal following of customers buying her one-of-a-kind clothing. Her 2012-2013 collection, “Evolve,” includes designs inspired by “nature, the sky and the science of sails.”

Armstrong has won House of Diehl’s Miami Style War, she was commissioned by Lancome and Jean Paul Gaultier to design garments for perfume launches, and she has donated couture gowns to charitable organizations like the American Heart Association.

You can find Armstrong’s designs via her website or at Haus Fashion in Wynwood at 2527 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL.

Potty Training Using Positive Reinforcement

BY

My daughter just turned three and we thought she’d be in diapers forever.  Not really, but sometimes it seemed that way. We had tried to potty train her at 18 months and she was all for it, but not mature enough to “hold it.”  We tried again around two-years-old and it was a NO GO. She screamed and cried and begged for her diaper back. It scared her! I even tried to lure her in with big girl (and boy) undies that had her favorite characters plastered all over them.  Nope.

When I got pregnant with our second child the fear set in. Two kids in diapers? I wanted so badly to train our first before the second arrive, but that didn’t work out. So, after the baby was born and big sister had accepted and warmed to the idea of little sister, we tried again, and it took!

To start on your own journey here are some tips:

Pick a potty training technique – there are many to choose from:
  • Infant Potty Training (also known as Elimination Communication) – Parents hold their babies over the toilet when they show signs that they need to go.  This starts as early as one week old.
  • Practice Until You Get It – Introduce the idea of potty training and schedule practice sessions until your child catches on.
  • 1 – 3 Day Method – The first day of training is an all out boot-camp of no diapers and lots of redirecting to the potty.  Some use a doll to show their child process and then the toddler starts practicing themselves.  A few days of follow up are needed to head off accidents.
  • They Will Train When Their Ready – The belief is that at some point a child will basically train themselves.  Sometimes it comes from peer pressure, sometimes they just no longer want to “go” in a diaper.
Most families end up using a combination of these techniques.  We started with “boot-camp” but ended up drifting into “practice” and then, FINALLY, she pretty much trained herself.

Positive reinforcement works a lot better than punishment.  You should always play the process UP, rather than mentioning any of the negative.  If your child has an accident, redirect him or her to the potty and then move on.  Charts and stickers and small prizes go a long way for some children.  Hugs and kisses and EXCITEMENT work for all!

Pick your tools - Here’s a list of helpful products that may make your training experience run smoother:
  • Toilet Seat Insert and/or Potty Chair – There are so many to choose from.  Let your child help pick it out so there is some ownership to the process.  Smaller children tend to do better on the potty chairs, while taller/older children are the right size for the inserts.
  • Travel Potty – You’ll want to leave the house at some point.  Many kids won’t be ready to balance on the edge of a unfamiliar toilet (even in another person’s home) right away.  My favorite was one from Kalencom that works as both an insert for public toilets and a stand alone potty when on-the-go.
  • Training Pants – The debate will be Cloth vs. Disposable–or none at all.  We had the cloth ones that feel WET but catch some dribbles.  Then we moved on to just undies during the day with disposable trainers for naps and bedtime.  Whatever works!

We ended using ALL of the above.  Since this process has been such a long one, we’ve tested many products.  Kids are fickle and don’t always want to use the seat they were so excited about in the line at Target.  Be prepared to have a few unused tools laying around.  Maybe your second child will like the opposite of your first.

Celebrate!  A Potty Party can be a great way to show your child how exciting this milestone is for everyone.  Some people decide to have potty parties to start the process while some choose to have them to celebrate the end of their diapering life.  I think they’re cute and I welcome any reason to plan an event.
In the end, do what feels right for you.  What finally worked for us might not work for you because every child is different.  Remember, it will come!  They will NOT attend college in diapers.

Bahamas Express Ferry Links Florida and the Bahamas

The fast ferry, Pinar del Río

The Baleària Group marked a new milestone in travel with a high speed maritime transport service between Fort Lauderdale and Grand Bahama island. The new service, which operates under the Bahamas Express brand, is a firm commitment to the internationalization of the company and also, therefore, to consolidating the company’s growth in the current economic climate.

"The Bahamas Express service provides an important link between South Florida and The Bahamas" said David Johnson, director general of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. "It is an affordable and easily accessible option that appeals to a variety of travelers, particularly families and for those seeking a relaxing and hassle free route to The Bahamas. We look forward to treating guests to our Bahamian hospitality, whether coming for a day or staying for a week."

The fast ferry, Pinar del Río, will operate the new service between Florida and the Bahamas, which undertakes the 76-mile crossing in 2.5 hours. Baleària Bahamas Express operates on a daily basis, except on Wednesdays, departing from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale at 10am and returning to the port at 10:30pm, allowing U.S. passengers to take day trips to Grand Bahama island.

The fast ferry Pinar del Río, which sails at a speed of 32 knots, has a capacity to hold up to 463 passengers. The ship also boasts different services such as a bar-cafeteria, duty-free shopping and tourist class and first class accommodation, among others. The interior will also be decorated with the same graphics, which depict the sea bed and is dominated by bright colors.

President of Baleària Adolfo Utor highlighted the potential of this area of the Caribbean and explained that it complements the routes which the company operates in the Mediterranean. Utor also pointed out that there is a market of more than 200,000 passengers per year on this new route adding that the company is also working on opening another connection to the Bahamian island of Bimini.

Party for the Planet (4/21-4/22)

Party for the Planet
Apr. 21-22 Sat. & Sun. TFTS Flowering Tree Sale Zoo Miami All Day Join us for Earth Day at the Zoo

Zoo Miami's Earth Day celebration, Party for the Planet, will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The Tropical Flowering Tree Society will be hosting the world's largest flowering tree
annual plant show and sale. There will also be fun "green" activities and entertainment for the entire family as well as animal enrichment with recycled items and/or natural materials like newspapers, cardboard tubes,
bamboo, old tires, fire hoses and more.

During Party for the Planet, guests can come in free of charge if they turn in a cellphone as part of the Zoo's ECO-CELL Phone Recycling Program. Not only will each person donating a cellphone enter the zoo for free on these two days, but they will also help save gorillas!

Cell phones include coltan, a mineral extracted in the deep forests of Congo in central Africa, home to the world's endangered lowland gorillas. Fueled by the worldwide cell phone boom, Congo's out-of-control coltan mining business has in recent years led to a dramatic reduction of animal habitat and the rampant slaughter of great apes for the illegal bush-meat trade.  Turning in a cell phone will reduce the need for additional coltan . and help protect the gorillas.

Eating lots of chocolate helps people stay thin, study finds

By Ryan Jaslow (cbsnews.com)

(CBS News) What's the best way to stay thin? A new study finds it's exercising and eating a healthy diet full of - chocolate?

Mindless eating: 8 food goofs that pack on pounds

The study found that people who frequently ate chocolate had a lower body mass index (BMI) than people who didn't.

Is it time to ditch fat-free for fudge?

For the study, published in the March 26 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers examined more than 1,000 healthy men and women who were free of heart disease, diabetes and cholesterol problems. They were all enrolled in another study that measured the effects of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, but for this study researchers assigned them questionnaires that gauged how often participants chowed down on chocolate.

The researchers found that the participants - who were an average age of 57 - ate chocolate for an average of twice of week and exercised roughly 3.5 times per week. But the more frequent chocolate-eaters had smaller BMIs, a ratio of height and weight that's used to measure obesity.

What explains the effect? Even though chocolate can be loaded with calories, it's full of antioxidants and other ingredients that may promote weight loss, the researchers said.

"I was pretty happy with this news myself," study author Dr. Beatrice Golomb, associate professor of medicine at the University of California-San Diego, told USA Today. "Findings show the composition of calories, not just the number of them, matters for determining ultimate weight."
Does that mean all diet regimens should include a daily chocolate bar? The researchers say it's too soon to tell.

"Our findings - that more frequent chocolate intake is linked to lower BMI - are intriguing," the authors wrote. However, "It is not a siren call to go out and eat 20 pounds of chocolate a day," Golomb told HealthDay.

This isn't the first study to suggest a daily dose of chocolate can do the body good. Last summer, a study of more than 100,000 people found those who ate the most chocolate were 39 percent less likely to get heart disease and 29 percent less likely to have a stroke, HealthPop reported. Months later a 10-year study of 33,000 women found a 30 percent reduced risk of stroke among chocaholics.
But experts warn not all chocolate is created equal, and some could contain lots of sugar and calories, which could lead to other health issues if consumed daily.

"I would not want people reading this to think that all [they] need to do to lose weight is eat more chocolate," Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center in New Haven, Conn., told WebMD. "That would be a huge mistake." Katz suggests dark chocolate, because of its bitter flavor,  may suppress appetite whereas sweet chocolate may stimulate it.

The Mayo Clinic has more on chocolate.

Be you, and be okay with it.

So simple yet so powerful!

24 Things I Could Do Before I Had Kids

Posted by Jen at PIWTPITT (blogs.babble.com)

I had a make over the other night with some of my girl friends.

Sitting in the chair at the salon, the hair stylist noted that my hair style is “cute.”  She said, “Do you always wear it so…..flippy?”  Why yes I do, I thought flippy was in.  Is it not?? She said, “It’s OK, we can tone it down a bit with the straightening iron.”  She proceeded to straighten the crap out of my hair and make it smoke (literally).  When she was done, she said, “There.  Now you don’t look so much like a mom!”
I moved over to the make up chair and this woman was not as diplomatic.  She said, “I’m going to have to do something about your brows.”

“Oh yeah,” I replied.  ”I keep meaning to get those done.”

“Yes, you should.  Soon,” she sighed heavily. “I’ll do what I can.  In the meantime, let’s draw attention to your eye shadow so the brows don’t stand out so much.”  I told her to break out a new bottle of concealer, because I was gonna need it.  She chuckled, but didn’t argue with me.

As I sat there in the chair having all my wrinkled badges of motherhood covered up with flesh colored putty, I started making a mental list in my head of all the things I used to do before I had kids.  Things like waxing my eyebrows (and my bikini area), wearing more than one color of eye shadow and picking clothes without first checking the tag to make sure it was washable and preferably no ironing required.

Here’s the list I came up with and I’m sure you can add to it:

1.  Go on a trip with nothing but an overnight bag.  Now I need a suitcase full of nothing but lovies, bedtime books, Shout wipes, wet wipes, anti-bacterial wipes (yes, I keep the wipes business going single handedly), coloring books, markers, games, snacks, First Aid kit, and extra batteries.  That doesn’t even include the additional suitcase I need if we’re going to stay somewhere with a pool or near the beach!
2.  Laugh (or sneeze) without the fear of wetting my pants.
3.  Go to the bathroom alone.  I’ve started locking the door, but I think it’s more annoying to have them pounding on the door while I’m trying to get my business done.  So I shout, “I’m pooping and it’s gonna get real stinky here in a minute.  You’d better move along!”  It seems to work for now.
4.  Have sex on the kitchen floor.  Actually, I never did this before I had kids, because the floor just seemed so cold and hard.  But now I definitely can’t do it because it’s still cold and hard…and sticky…and covered in crumbs.
5.  Sleep in.
6.  Decide at 10 PM at night to go get ice cream, go to the bar with the girls, go to Mexico, or anything spontaneous.  Even going grocery shopping at 10 PM has to be planned out.
7.  Spend $150 on my hair.  Maybe this is why I hate my hair now.  What do I expect when I go to Great Clips and I color my hair myself?
8.  Spend $150 on anything for myself.
9.  Read.  I used to read all the time.  I still do, only now I read Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Pinkalicious.
10.  Spend an entire day on the couch watching rated “R” movies.
11.  Drive by McDonald’s without thinking I wonder what the Happy Meal toy is right now.
12.  Wear heels.  I was never one to wear very high heels, but something happened after my children were born that I have absolutely no tolerance for anything higher than a flat.  I have a couple of wedge heels that I can manage for an hour or two.  I really don’t even like tie shoes anymore either.  After I’m done tying the kids’ shoes the last thing I want to do is tie another pair.  I seriously look for slip on shoes as often as possible.
13.  Swear.  A lot.  I still swear and my mother would say it’s a lot, but now when I drop something on my toe instead of yelling, “Mother f%$#r!”  I have to say, “Mmmmmm….fuh……ohhhh…owie, owie, owie!!”
14.  Roll my eyes at the mom with dried egg in her hair, one leaking boob soaking through her filthy sweatshirt, wearing men’s pajama bottoms and slippers limping behind an over flowing shopping cart full of processed food while towing three screaming kids under the age of 5.  Now I just give her the look that says, “Hang in there, sister.  Bedtime is coming and there’s a bottle of wine with your name on it.”
15.  Buy furniture and carpet that isn’t stain treated.  I’ve bought two new couches since I’ve had children.  One is dark tan and one is brown.  What does that tell you?  The days of white couches are behind me.
16.  Walk around my house in bare feet without the fear of stepping on Legos, Barbie and/or Monster High doll shoes, Squinkies (they don’t hurt, but they scare the crap out of me, because I think they’re big squishy bugs), Mighty Beans, Go Go Crazy Bones, Hex Bugs, or Littlest Pet Shop figures.  Not to mention grapes, raisins, Cheerios, apple peels, or puddles of milk.  (Interestingly enough I’ve never stepped on a Cheeto, apparently my kids hang on to those better or take the hit and eat it off the floor anyway.)
17.  Invest solely in Sharpie markers.  Now if it doesn’t say “washable” it doesn’t come in the door.
18.  Read anything about dying children.
19.  Eat a hot meal.  By the time I’m done making sure the kids have what they need, cutting up their food into manageable pieces, blowing on anything that is too hot, arguing about why they must eat what’s in front of them, and blowing again, because it’s still too hot, my food is ice cold.
21.  Talk to the Hubs about movies, current events or anything that doesn’t relate to our kids.  Now we just say things like, “Did Gomer poop today?  He’s been constipated lately.” or “I need thirty bucks.  Adolpha’s feet grew again.”
22.  Drive a two-seater.  Now we drive practical cars, because we’re practical people.
23.  Never used my sleeve to wipe a child’s runny nose.  Now I’m so immune to snot, I’ll wipe a stranger’s child’s nose just out of habit.
24.  Hold a new baby without getting a little teary eyed and kind of wishing for another one (before the Hubs smacks me upside the head and reminds me that I think I’m sleep-deprived now).

April 13 – Daddy Yankee
Daddy Yankee did more than anyone to establish reggaeton as a marketable music style during the early 21st century. Yankee’s success was so phenomenal in the wake of his 2004 mainstream breakthrough album Barrio Fino, that it stands tall as the definitive reggaeton album of its time. Boasting a pair of fantastic hits, “Gasolina” and “Lo Que Pasó, Pasó,” the album established the production duo Luny Tunes as reggaeton’s hottest hitmakers. Barrio Fino was also the first reggaeton album to reach number one on the Top Latin Album chart, a position it held for roughly a year’s time while selling over a million copies in the United States alone. Daddy Yankee became more than just a reggaetonero, having transformed himself into an international name brand by the time his 2007 follow-up album, El Cartel: The Big Boss, was released. Other albums include Talento de Barrio (2008) and Mundial (2010). His hit single, “La Despedida” from the Mundial album, reached number four on the Latin Billboard chart. “Ven Conmigo” is the first official single on the Preistige (2012) album and features bachata singer Prince Royce. His most recent hit single, “Lovumba,” which means Love and Rumba, is his way of expressing love through music. It’s no surprise that Lovumba has been on the top charts of Billboard for the more than 20 weeks, ranked #1 in the Latin Urban Chart and Pop Chart and #2 in the Tropical Chart.

May 11 – LL Cool J
Born James Todd Smith, LL Cool J is a nickname that stands for “Ladies Love Cool James.” He is known for romantic ballads such as “I Need Love,” “Around the Way Girl” and “Hey Lover” as well as pioneering hip-hop such as “I Can’t Live Without My Radio,” “I’m Bad,” “The Boomin’ System” and “Mama Said Knock You Out”. He has released thirteen studio albums and two greatest hits compilations, including 2008′s Exit 13. He has also appeared in numerous films, and currently stars as NCIS Special Agent Sam Hanna on the CBS crime drama television series NCIS: Los Angeles.

June 8 – Chino y Nacho
Chino y Nacho are a Venezuelan reggaeton duo with a romantic, tropical style who made their album debut nationally in 2008 and later scored international chart-topping smash hits with “Mi Niña Bonita” and “Tu Angelito” in 2010. Founded in 2007, the duo is comprised of Chino (born Jesús Alberto Miranda Pérez) and Nacho (born Miguel Ignacio Mendoza). Prior to founding Chino y Nacho, they were members of the Caracas-based tropical boy band Calle Ciega. Following the incredible success of Calle Ciega, Chino y Nacho split from Calle Ciega and made their full-length album debut shortly thereafter with Época de Reyes (2008). Showcasing a wide-ranging reggaeton style that is both romantic and tropical, the album was a blockbuster success in Venezuela, spawning the smash hits “Vagabundo de Amor.” Chino y Nacho’s second studio album, Supremo (2011) debuted at the top of the Billboard Latin Albums Chart and during its release week, it was the highest selling Spanish-language album at the iTunes Latino store. Chino y Nacho’s recent single, “Bebé Conita” featuring Jay Sean, promises to be another smash for this duo.

July 13 – Flo Rida
Not only has the Florida-born rapper become a chart fixture thanks to the blockbuster singles “Low (feat. T-Pain),” “Right Round,” “Club Can’t Handle Me” and “Good Feeling,” but he’s also broken down barriers by uniting millions of fans of pop, hip-hop, and club music around the world and establishing himself as an international, genre-busting superstar in the process. Flo brings his experiences traveling the globe to his third album, Only One Flo (Part 1).

How To Enjoy Vacation With In-Laws And Extended Family

BY (askmissa.com)

If you really take the time to sit and think about it, marriage is a complicated union. We’ve all heard the saying, if you marry him, then you’re marrying his whole family. So what does this really mean? It means that although you’re forming a family of your own, they will always be his parents, and will always be his siblings. Let’s face it, they’ve been in his life a lot longer than you have. Of course you and the kids are his top priority. You’re the ones he works so hard to provide for. You’re the person he turns to first with good and bad news, when he needs encouragement, and when he needs advice. Or at least that’s how it should be. We all try to set necessary boundaries with our parents to be able to develop a strong marriage relationship with our spouses. But the truth of the matter is that our parents will always be in our lives. It’s just the way things work.

These days, I find that couples not only isolate themselves from extended family, but are full of negative thoughts and reactions when it comes to spending time with family. This negativity leads to not being able to enjoy and appreciate our extended family the way we should.
Recently, my husband and I went on our annual vacation with his parents, sister, her husband, and their children. It was quite a hike for us, as we had to fly from California to New Jersey where they live, and then we all flew to the Caribbean together. My husband and I definitely got a lot of training for our future with kids, if we are blessed with any. Children are especially a lot of work when you are traveling! As soon as I boarded that plane to the Caribbean, I made a conscious decision to embrace the fact that this wasn’t just any vacation. It was a fully loaded “family” vacation. Here are a few things I learned about how to make the most of an extended-family vacation.

Keep in mind that you are expected to spend time with your in-laws. After all, it is a “family vacation.” It’s not your honeymoon. It’s not just a getaway from your busy life. It’s an opportunity to spend quality time with one another. And, think about it. Most of us are so caught up in our own busy schedules that we don’t make much time to spend with our extended family. Yes, it can be awkward, but only as awkward as you let it become. And you very well might be surprised at how much fun spending time with them can be. I had a blast!

Take the time to connect with each person one on one. Being with the whole family all day long can get overwhelming for everyone. I made sure to get away from the crowd and spend time with family members one on one. I had some really special moments with my mother-in-law on this trip. We lay on the beach and spent time sipping on cocktails and chatting about life. She gave me wonderful advice. I was also able to have some girl time with my sister-in-law. We spent some time at the hotel spa, getting massages together and laughing about funny moments with our husbands and her kids. I was also able to get to know my niece better. You can read about that here.

Plan your days in a way that provides some alone time with your own family. During any vacation, it’s important to have a little bit of time away from the hustle and bustle of the large group and have exclusive hang-out time with your own family (even if it’s just you and your husband). After all, you are away from your normal routines, and it’s a great opportunity to spend time with one another, developing your relationships apart from the stresses of every day life.
Whether you are preparing for a large family vacation or an upcoming family gathering with extended family, remember to embrace your time together, using the opportunity to get to know each other and build relationships that will last a lifetime…because they probably will!

Web Reflects an Ugly Reality for Girls

By Family Editors (living.msn.com)

It’s hard to watch girls as young as 11 stare into their webcams and ask an Internet audience of millions: Am I ugly or not?

By Jenee Osterheldt (McClatchy-Tribune News Service).- Teen and pre-teen girls are posting videos of themselves on YouTube and asking strangers to tell them if they are pretty or ugly, or fat or skinny. Unfortunately, this is the latest Internet heartbreak, one that has been years in the making.

The YouTube trend can be traced back as far as 5 years ago, but it’s clear that the videos picked up buzz over the last few years. There are thousands. One taped in 2010 has more than 4 million views, some 13,647 likes and 42,268 dislikes (and counting).

I want to be shocked. But teenagers don’t change much through the decades. And as long as girls have been teens, they have grappled with self-esteem, approval and peer pressure.

People want to argue that this is new. It isn’t. When I was in middle and high school we had “slam books” that deemed people popular or not. There were “crush lists” too. It only makes sense that this adolescent need to judge and be judged would get worse with social media involved.

Think back to the late '90s. Some of the earliest popular websites had to do with looks. Remember the site Hot or Not? Or the pro-anorexia blogs that popped up and continue to infect the Internet today. And then there’s Formspring, the survey-like site that allows people to ask questions and leave comments anonymously.
Social media has always played on self-esteem, often hiding behind the idea of having “friends” and “followers” and people “liking” the things you say.
This YouTube trend strips away all the niceties. Now we see kids logging in, desperate for acceptance. The response has been as expected. People are outraged and heartbroken. But they are also passing judgment.

I’ve seen mothers say their daughters would never be on the Internet asking the world those kinds of questions. I saw another story that said people need to do better at building their children up and teaching them their worth.

I agree that parents have to cultivate confidence. It’s important to patrol what your children are doing online, that’s true. But not all the girls in those videos are products of bad parenting. I’ve known girls who hear their mom and dad lift them up daily and still fight with the mirror.

According to the NYU Child Study Center, by the age of 15, girls are twice as likely as boys to become depressed. Among fifth- through 12th-graders, 47 percent said they wanted to lose weight because of magazine pictures.

This is the world we live in.

Magazines rate 'America's Most Beautiful People,' TV slams the worst-dressed and there are all kinds of pageants and reality shows that often hang on how good someone looks.

With all the shallow junk that pop culture and their peers throw their way, sometimes it’s easier for teen girls to judge themselves against society’s impossible beauty bar rather than the loving affirmations they receive at home.

Those little girls staring into the camera are beautiful. It’s our ugly obsession with superficial beauty that could use the makeover.

Dali Miami Art Exhibit Opening Event at The Moore Building on 3/7/12

So I was shopping around for ideas on what to do for Valentine's Day with the hubby and I came upon a Voice Deal special on this Dali Miami.  I thought to myself ok the hubby likes Dali and I had been wanting to go to his museum and knew it would be a long shot so when I saw the special VIP tickets for opening night I thought it would be a great Valentines gift.  Drinks, food by Chef Adrianne Calvo and Dali sounded good to me different yes but it's what we do.

I had never been to a VIP Event before let alone an art exhibit so I wasn't sure what to expect I also had never gone to the Design District boy was I impressed.  I had heard people talk about it but had never ventured down there it was amazing, the stores and galleries very nice.

Red Bottoms!!

Dali Miami was in the Moore Building it was packed to say the least and the parking was horrendous!!  We parked about 4 blocks away me and heels and 4 blocks hated it!!!  As we got closer we saw an array of expensive cars out front from Mercedes to Ferrari's yup VIP I thought.

We proceeded inside got tagged and off we went.  Mind you since it was VIP drinks were included and so were appetizers (so they said).  We spotted the bar and along with it the huge, long line.  We decided to skip it.  On to the art which is why we were there right?  Well, in Miami that's not necessarily true all the time especially when your talking VIP.  Immediately I spotted one of the Housewives of Miami being taped, everyone taking pictures of them or trying to.  Yup welcome to Miami!

Alexia Echevarria "The Cuban Barbie": Venue Magazine

The Moore building held 3 floors of Dali's work. The 2nd floor was the most disturbing of his collection I thought.  Still no appetizers and no drinks.  We did find another bar on the second floor and the line, again was too too long we stood in it for about 20 minutes and got tired and just gave up.  Oh did I mention more Housewives of Miami, more taping, more pictures.  I remember telling my husband how I thought this was supposed to be an art exhibit yet it felt more like a glitz and glamour party.  The whose who in Miami trying to be seen, texting, taking pictures.  There were some people who were there for the art but not many.

The Housewives of Miami more taping (Lea Black and Audriana de Moura)

I was going to skip this part but I cannot tell a lie sooo as I was headed down the staircase to the first floor yes, you know it I fell!! I lost my footing on those wobbly stairs and fell.

The wobbly stairs :(
Hubby looked back and saw me on the floor he couldn't believe I had fallen I couldn't believe it I mean really thank god the lighting was dim and there was no one around except for 2 ladies going up the stairs they quickly turned to me and asked me if I was ok I immediately replied yes I was fine and picked myself up I was so nervous! I couldn't believe I had fallen that and I didn't want to create a scene I mean VIP omg!!!  We headed for the first floor, no more stairs for me lol.  What next you say, well a red carpet fashion show complete with psychedelically painted day-glo models backed by Madonna, Adele, and LMFAO.  What would Dali say about this???? Want to take a guess....

All in all it was a great event to people watch as most of these VIP events are in Miami.  People, Miami people especially, somehow forget the real reason for these events.  I basically paid for the VIP tickets because the drinks and the appetizers were included but we got nothing no drinks or food.  I could've paid for the regular admission tickets and saved myself a lot of money considering the special for those tickets were $10 oh well that's what I get to be in the lime light lol.

BTW we know there was food and drinks because here is the evidence......lol

Oh well all in all I can truly say my first VIP experience was well very interesting to say the least and Dali's artwork well very interesting as well lol!!!

Did any of you make it to this event? I would love to have your comments if you did.....
