LeJeune Road Median Beautification Project Starts

Work began recently on the LeJeune Road Median Beautification Project, which will transform this major north/south corridor with 12 new medians installed with trees, groundcover, flowering annuals and irrigation without reducing travel lanes for motorists.    “LeJeune Road is one of the main entrances into and through the city, and it is befitting that its appearance is in keeping with the City Beautiful,” said Mayor Jim Cason.  The City is operating differently from years past after addressing problems that have been strangling the City’s budget.  Pension plans have been significantly reformed, taxes have been cut, and the City is operating more efficiently and effectively.  According to City Manager Pat Salerno, “these fiscal and operational changes allow the City to get more out of your tax dollar and have more funds to make investments in your neighborhoods such as these improvements to LeJeune Road.”

Good news for gourmet food lovers: a new Epicure Gourmet Market will open this fall in Coral Gables. The Epicure Gourmet Market & Café will unveil its 24,000 square-foot store in October on the ground floor of Gables Ponce, a mixed-use project under construction at the corner of Ponce de Leon Boulevard and LeJeune Road. “We’ve been searching for the perfect location within Coral Gables for quite some time,” said Jason Starkman, owner of Epicure. “Gables Ponce was the ideal fit with its stunning architecture and prime visibility. The increasing demand for gourmet and specialty foods in the area was also a deciding factor.” In addition to its typical mix of groceries, meats, fine wines, teas, specialty foods and more, the Coral Gables location will include a European style restaurant and café offering full service beer, wine and coffee bar. The closest Epicure Market location is in Miami Beach.

"Don't Shoot!" New York Restaurants Don't Want You "Foodstagramming" Their Eats

http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/shortorder/2013/01/dont_shoot_new_york_restaurant.php

When you consider the food-related restrictions in New York, you should cry fat, giant tears of joy that you live in Miami -- a city that considers rules and regulations mere trivialities of no concern to locals. Restaurants in the Big Apple have instituted an "unofficial" ban on food photography, furthering the once great city's decline into a police state run by Mickey Mouse.

I'm not sure how tall Bloomberg is, but there must be something diminutive about a man who acts less like the mayor of a world-class city and more like the second-class dictator of a third-world country. He's banned smoking in parks and beaches. He's banned large sodas. He's banned food donations to homeless shelters. He's got his eye on milkshakes and popcorn. He's a Nazi and he's contagious. New Yorkers might as well be marching in step and wearing arm bands, the way they're swallowing (and now promoting) his anti-civil rights agenda. He's infected the rest of New York with his totalitarian food agenda and diners as well as restaurants are sporting "Team Food Nazi" t-shirts.

That snapshot you took of your meal and quickly posted online via social media sites like Twitter and Instagram is called a "foodstagram" and New York restaurateurs want you to stop taking them. Upscale restaurants such as Fat Duck, Le Bernadine, and Per Se have made it clear that they "discourage flash photography" from their guests.

As reported on ABC News, Per Se's official statement is that it, "does not have a no-photography policy, although if guests do photograph, Per Se asks that they refrain from using flash and be discreet so as to not disturb the experience of other guests."

"Flash photography disturbs other diners," according to Le Bernadine's statement.

The funny thing is, although I also engage in the production of food porn, I understand how other diners may become slightly annoyed by people constantly getting up from their chairs, rearranging their plates for the best angle and lighting, and click, click, clicking away around them as they are trying to savor some particularly delightful morsel on say, their wedding anniversary. Much like one may cringe when being sat next to a crying baby on an airplane.

But, seriously -- c'mon, folks. Have we become such a wimpy, whiny people that we're demanding rules to regulate people taking pictures of their own food? That someone snapping away next to us is enough to disturb our entire dining experience? I've eaten meals with plenty of foodstagrammers, and the people they annoy most are the ones dining with them. Crying babies upset everyone within a two-mile radius.

Of course, every regime has its detractors. David Bouley, head chef at Bouley, invites diners into his kitchen to take their foodstagrams. While the restaurant doesn't ban or encourage foodstagrammers from taking pictures inside the dining area, a Bouley representative says, "If there are people that are taking pictures then they take pictures in the kitchen. [Bouley] makes customers a part of the dining experience. He's always welcomed people into his kitchen. They love it. He loves it."

Should kids be forced to write thank-you notes?

http://www.today.com/moms/should-kids-be-forced-write-thank-you-notes-1B8057224

Are good manners going the way of the Dodo bird? While most of us were raised to write thank-you notes promptly, it seems some of us haven’t passed that bit of etiquette onto our kids.
Philip Galanes, New York Times columnist and author of the book, “Social Q’s: How to Survive the Quirks, Quandaries and Quagmires of Today,” discussed the disappearing thank-you card and other etiquette dilemmas facing parents on TODAY.

Galanes recounted the story of a grandmother of nine who wrote to him that she has never received a thank-you card for any of the birthday and Christmas presents she has given her grandchildren over the years. She was annoyed, but unsure how to demand a bit of gratitude – a predicament that offended Matt Lauer, father of three. “I think it’s unacceptable that they don’t write any thank you notes,” Matt said.

So, what did the manners expert recommend? “Call the older grandchildren and call the parents of the younger grandchildren and say ‘It’d be really nice if I could hear when you get the gifts and how the kids liked them’,” Galanes said.
"Dear Grandma, Thanks for the books for Christmas. I really like them." There, was that so hard?

"Dear Grandma, Thanks for the books for Christmas. I really like them." There, was that so hard?

Many of the grandparents who read his column favored a more subversive approach, suggesting that the grandma send the grandkids things like unsigned checks or empty gift boxes to get the point across. Others suggested including a pre-printed thank-you note with the gifts.

Galanes noted that while the older generation was all for giving today’s youngsters a bit of a nudge to prompt good etiquette, many kids were having none of it. “I think we’re in a generational shift. I think we’re in a serious shift,” Galanes said.

From kids, Galanes heard things like, “I’ve never bought (or even seen) a stamp in my life.”  Another said, “If I have to send a thank you note, I’d rather not get a gift,” – a sentiment that horrified mom-of-two Natalie Morales, who responded, “That’s terrible! That’s awful.”
As a generation of parents, have we just gotten too busy for good manners? Have we decided that saying thank you just isn’t worth the hassle?

Another hot button etiquette topic the group discussed was how to handle a crying baby in a public place. Galanes recalled the story of a young mom who’d written that she felt frustrated when strangers offered unsolicited advice for how to soothe her fussy baby, even going so far as to pop a pacifier in her child's mouth. Again, Galanes noted a generational divide. Older readers believed that fussy babies should be removed from public places, and bemoaned today’s “entitled parents.”

However, younger readers felt that we should be more patient with new moms and that people should accept a little crying as a fact of life.

Brazilian Culture Comes To Coral Gables

Have you ever wanted to learn Portuguese? Participate in exciting Brazilian cultural festivals? Or eat pão de queijo? Now you can in downtown Coral Gables. In its newly opened location at 300 Aragon Avenue, Suite 250, the Brazil-USA Cultural Center of Florida (CCBU) is bringing the heartbeat of Brazil to Coral Gables by offering a unique mix of cultural and community outreach programs. “The Brazil-USA Cultural Center of Florida is a welcome addition to the City of Coral Gables and an important point of contact for the Brazilian community in South Florida,” said Coral Gables Mayor Jim Cason. Whitefly Continues To Affect Plants In The City

Please be on the lookout for a pesky insect that may be affecting the plants in your neighborhood. The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly continues to affect plants such as gumbo limbo, black olive, Brazilian pepper, live oak and mangos. This insect is a different whitefly than the one causing defoliation and branch dieback of ficus in South Florida. The actual effect of an infestation on the health of a plant is unknown; however, whiteflies in general can cause plant decline, defoliation and branch dieback. The most noticeable symptoms of an infestation of this whitefly are the abundance of the white, waxy material covering the leaves and also excessive sooty mold. Please monitor your plants for early signs of an infestation because it will be easier to manage the pest before it causes major damage. If you have an infestation on a tree, be sure ;to search nearbytrees as well because this whitefly feeds on many types of trees. Washing plants off with water can be an effective tool to help manage whiteflies for small infestations or small plants. Should you notice an infestation on a City tree, contact the Community Services Department, Public Service Division at 305-460-5135 for an evaluation and possible treatment. To read more about this new infestation of whitefly and what to do to protect your plants, click here.
